Signs that we use for group cycling

The sight is obscured as you cycle behind someone. In order for the group cycling to work safely, it is also necessary for the cyclists to pay attention to possible obstacles.

The communication in the group is primarily done with characters in the group and verbally forward in the group. As a first-class cyclist it is important to lift your eyes and track along the road to discover holes, gravel, rocks, other vehicles, pedestrians, etc. and then make signs so that the group is aware of it.

Warnings for these obstacles are then conveyed back into the group of hand signals, characters and possibly orally so that one can safely pass them.

Obstacles on the roadway – type holes, wells, glass, gravel – point down the roadway with the hand on the same side as the obstacle.

Arc or the like – Move your hand behind your back with your palm back to the left and right several times

Obstacles beside you – type road sign that stands out, pedestrian, stationary car etc. – pat on the side of your buttock where the obstacle is on (pay attention to the group as noise also occurs).

Obstacles all over the lane – type tapered road, roadbike, railroad tracks, etc. wave with any hand behind the back ”to the right”.

Stop – an upward hand

Slow down – Pump movement with one hand, palm downward

Turn left / right – A common sign, hold an arm towards the direction while it is supposed to turn the group.

One line – sometimes we need to ride a joint instead of 2 pairs – an upward hand with a finger in the air (index finger).

Two pairs – to return to two pairs – An upward hand with two fingers in the air

Orally

Sometimes it’s more appropriate to call some kind of warning sometimes in combination with any of the above signs

Hole – Scream while pointing to the hole (especially bigger holes)

Glass – Scream while pointing to the side of the glass

Vehicles – Scream ”car / bus / truck”. All of the group forwarders by repeating the words through the group (mainly on narrower roads)
